The Security Survey is one of the primary inputs to the risk analysis that management (your Chief Security Officer) uses to develop the security posture statement.

Our security surveys are guided by selected Best Practices, Industry Standards and Regulations. Best Practices are developed by standards agencies such as NIST and coalitions such as ISO. Industry Standards are determined by prevailing usage and regulations are established by government agencies such as HHS or OSHA.

Our security surveying process uses prepared surveying questions, checklist based observations, and testing to develop a composite picture that can be quickly summarized and drilled down to specifics.

Let’s get physical

It’s long been the case that physical security was in a completely different department than the IT security organization. These two organizations rarely talked with one another.

Wouldn’t it be nice if perpetrators were strictly physical threats or computer threats? The reality is that very often criminals are purely opportunistic. They’d just as happily steal a laptop as break into your database to steal credit cards.

In one investigation of industrial espionage, hired security guards were removing disk drives from computers at night, passing them over a fence where they were being copied and returned by morning. Was this a physical or a cyber-incident? Does it matter?
